Help
Ask what a citation establishes.
A source reference should support the specific claim beside it.
Trace the claim
Inspect the source passage, not merely the linked title. Ask whether the passage actually supports the claim and preserves its qualifications.
Check scope and date
A source can describe a different version, population, jurisdiction, time period, or operating condition. Those differences can change whether it supports the conclusion.
Prefer primary evidence
Where practical, inspect the original documentation, source data, or method. A summary can help locate evidence without substituting for it.
Separate interpretation
Keep observations, inference, and recommendation distinguishable. A citation does not make an interpretation certain.
Handle missing evidence
An inaccessible, conflicting, outdated, or unsupported source should qualify the answer. Do not turn a missing check into a confident assertion.
