Understand code. Work through a fix.
A practical brief for explaining unfamiliar code, reproducing a bug and reviewing a proposed change.
Workflow guide. Merism is in development; the examples below are suggested briefs, not results from a live product session.
Describe the observed behavior
Provide the language and version, a minimal code sample, the exact error and what should have happened. Remove credentials and private data. If the issue depends on an environment, describe the relevant configuration without sharing secrets.
- Example brief: This date parser rejects 2026-10-19 but accepts 19/10/2026. Explain the likely format mismatch, propose a small correction and show cases for invalid dates and leap years.
Keep the proposed change focused
Ask for an explanation before adopting a patch. Identify which behavior changes, which inputs are supported and whether a new dependency is necessary. Preserve unrelated work in the repository.
- Suggested output: diagnosis, a small diff, reasoning and checks for the original failure and nearby edge cases.
- An AI explanation is a proposal; run and review the code in your own development environment.
Review the change before release
Reproduce the failure, apply the proposed fix in an isolated branch and run checks that exercise the defect. Review compatibility and error handling. A successful build does not establish that a particular bug has been fixed.
- Public repository access, automated code execution and deployment integrations are not announced by this guide.
